MySpace, Facebook, YouTube, and Second Life are not just for kids any
more. Social networking sites like these are now home to a more mature
internet audience. According to Ipsos Insight, one adult in five has
visited a social networking site. What’s more, some of them like
Growing Bolder and Eons cater specifically to people aged 50 and over. But how exactly can these social networking sites be useful to adults?
Ever heard of www.clik2compliants.co.uk? No? Then good! This is just
one of the growing number of sites which are run for dissatisfied
customers to publicly air their complaints about bad service. See your
name posted on these sites or get contacted by them and you know you
have a problem! How can you prevent your business from becoming
'feature of the week'? Of all the skills small business owners need
these days, the one least practiced is the ability to step back and
look at your business from the customer's perspective.
THALHEIM, Germany — This sad stretch of eastern Germany, with its
deserted coal mines and corroded factories, epitomizes post-industrial
gloom. It is a place where even the clouds rarely seem to part. Yet the sun was shining here the other day — and nowhere more brightly
than at Q-Cells, a German company that surpassed Sharp last year to
become the world’s largest maker of photovoltaic solar cells. Q-Cells
is the main tenant among a flowering cluster of solar start-ups here in
an area known as Solar Valley.
A champion of Israeli tech startups, Vardi has been asked by the government to strengthen Israel's business ties with Europe. It's May 15, and Israeli technology guru Yossi Vardi is moderating a
session on the future of the Internet at a conference in Jerusalem. On
stage with the fatherly 65-year-old is a who's who of tech and media
bigwigs, including Google (GOOG) co-founder Sergey Brin, Yahoo! (YHOO)
President Susan Decker, and News Corp. (NWS) Chief Executive Rupert
Murdoch.
After years of fretting over coming shortages, the country is actually
facing a dwindling number of young people entering engineering and
technology-related fields. Universities call it “rikei banare,” or “flight from science.” The
decline is growing so drastic that industry has begun advertising
campaigns intended to make engineering look sexy and cool, and
companies are slowly starting to import foreign workers, or sending
jobs to where the engineers are, in Vietnam and India.
The stark truth about managing our money these days is that we are mostly on our own. Few employers want us around for 40 years, so our income is likely to
have ups and downs and disappear altogether for brief periods between
jobs. Saving for retirement is now mostly our responsibility, too.
Health insurance, for those of us who have it and manage to keep it,
requires increasingly large amounts of money out of our pockets. The
list goes on and on.
