Do not make Malaysia a laughing stock of the world, politicians must have morality and ability

mencius_wince.jpgI write in response to Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen’s suggestion that the issue of morality should not be used against candidates contesting in the MCA elections. (”Ng: Judge by ability, not morality” — NST, 11 Aug).

Is there such a dearth of politicians of impeccable character and high moral fibre that we must settle for those with tarnished pasts?

Dr Ng, as MCA Wanita head, is sending out the wrong message — that ability overrides morality — to the youth of today.

Politics without conscience is a dangerous thing. It is morality, being in accord with and conscious of the high standards of right and good conduct, that earns respect and enhances reputations.

Unlike many others, MCA vice-president Datuk Ong Tee Keat was willing to take a brave stand on the issue of morality. Instead of being applauded for his courage, he is accused of attempting to achieve his own goals by targeting a certain individual who had infringed on moral values. He is also right when he says that perpetrators of immoral acts tend to blame others for their own weaknesses.

Malaysia has become a laughing stock to the rest of the world.

Our leaders and public figures are repeatedly in the limelight for the wrong reasons, such as sexual scandals and misappropriation of public funds.

It is not as simple as what Dr Ng says, because she can also be accused of furthering her own agenda by adopting a “holier-than-thou” attitude.

It is not just about forgiving; we can all do that. It is about repairing the harm done to the image of this country by those we have placed in positions of power.

DR F.S. MALHI
