How else can residents protect themselves against criminals?
security_guard_winceThe writer cannot simply blame the residents for taking action to protect their lives and properties. Rather than understanding the situation they are in, the writer has condemned the act as illegal. Seriously, if the writer thinks that this is not a solution and is creating much unhappiness to the visitors… Should the residents in the area suffer the wrath of crime to satisfy the convenience of their visitors?

Article:

I am responding to the article "Illegal barricading of public roads" and “Public housing estates shouldn’t be barricaded

I empathise with the writer over the barricades. It certainly gives visitors a lot of trouble by forcing them to go through the checks and security imposed by the residents in the area. I can really sense the anger from the writer about the probable illegal fencing of the residential areas as well as the 'rude' security guards insisting on his private particulars to enter the place.

While arguing against the setting up of the barricades, gates and fences surrounding the area, the writer has failed to see the source of the problem.

In truth, who would want to live in a jail, especially when he built it himself? The residents concerned have in fact built their own jail where entrance to the area is 'heavily guarded'. More residents are building their own 'jails'. This is not limited to Cheras but becoming a common sight at all residential estates.

The very reason for the residents to do so indicates the deterioration of security in residential areas. Our police force has simply failed in its task to control crime rate.

The writer cannot simply blame the residents for taking action to protect their lives and properties. Rather than understanding the situation they are in, the writer has condemned the act as illegal.

Seriously, if the writer thinks that this is not a solution and is creating much unhappiness to the visitors, what solution could the writer provide to solve the resident's problem?

Should the residents in the area suffer the wrath of crime to satisfy the convenience of their visitors?
